Status: Abandoned, Word Count: 517,100, Pairing: The story explored Harry/Fleur before it was abandoned. There may have been other plans in the works. Genre: Family/Adventure
Author’s Summary: When, after that fateful Halloween night, the wrong Potter twin is hailed the Boy Who Lived, how will Harry’s life turn out? With a power he knows not, an ancient prophecy and one Severus Snape practically raising him, interesting at least is a given.
My Thoughts: Well the author’s right about one thing: Family Bonds is certainly interesting. I’ve felt conflicted about this fic for the longest time, so I might as well lay out all my thoughts on it here. Let’s start with what I like. The character work here is extremely well done. In fact, and I cannot believe I’m saying this, Severus Snape’s character arc in this story is absolutely fascinating. Cause he really does start out just like he is in canon, and he changes over the course of the story in a way that I found to be believable. Harry’s arc in the story is also wonderful. The Wrong Boy-Who-Lived in this story, Adrian Potter, is actually a really fun character. He’s not bashed, and neither are James and Lily, and his dynamic with Harry is really cute and fun. I also think this story has some really cool ideas in it, and I’d say that it’s worth a read, even if it’s abandoned, as it’s just a very fun time. It’s not angsty, it’s a light, fluffy, fun story, and I like that. Unfortunately, this story does run into pit falls here and there. For one, Harry’s magical prowess is completely fucking insane, and the things he achieves at the age of fourteen certainly stretch my suspension of disbelief a fair amount, and no matter how well it’s done, I have to dock points off for relying on the Snape raises Harry trope. It’s not literal here, Snape’s more of a mentor than a father for the first bit, but the story is called Family Bonds for a reason, and that reason is that Snape becomes a father figure to Harry. However, despite this, the writing’s solid, the characters are fun, and the story is interesting. I’m not really sure if I’d call this fic good, but I think it is definitely worth a read. It’s an experience to say the least.
Unfortunately, it has been seven years since the story updated, and the author seems to have abandoned fanfiction.net shortly after abandoning the story. I think it’s an absolute shame that this story was never finished, as I thought it was very interesting, but at this point I consider the idea of it being finished to be incredibly unlikely.
