Status: Complete, Word Count: 10,000, Pairing: Harry Potter/Luna Lovegood

Author’s Summary: When Harry Potter is brought to work in the stables at Downton Abbey as a boy, he finds more than a new home: he finds a friend. But can his friendship with a lady of the house last, as their lives take different paths and war looms on the horizon?
Characterization: The characterization in this fic is absolutely fantastic. The only two characters in this fic who matter are Harry and Luna, and the author spends a lot of time fleshing them out. Besides Lunar Calendar, I have never seen a fic write Luna so well. She just wants to live, and escape the shackles and expectations that have been placed on her. This contrasts so well with Harry, who spends the course of the fic realizing that, if he could, he’d easily bear the expectations with her if it meant they could be together. It’s sounds a bit cliche when written out the way I just did, but MightyAmphitrite makes it work really well. There are also some other Harry Potter characters who cameo in Downton Abbey roles. Ron is a fellow servant, Draco is a snobby, upperclass young man, etc. It all works fairly well, but it’s just completely outclassed by Harry and Luna. However, I do have to give a quick mention to Luna’s father in this fic, because he only has two very short scenes, but all of his actions and motivations make perfect sense and are completely believable. It’s excellent.
Plot: This fic has a simple, yet effective story. It chronicles Harry and Luna’s relationship throughout their lives. It starts with them meeting as young children and building a secret friendship together. It goes through how their duties continue dragging them apart as they grow older, and then it ends in a way I won’t spoil. It’s not really that special a plot. It works great for this story, but I won’t lie to you and pretend that this fic’s story is mind-blowing or anything.
Dialogue: The dialogue here is great. It’s flows great, it’s easy to tell who’s talking without reading “X said” at the end of every line, and it’s just very solid. It also successfully contains a lot of emotion occasionally. In fact, I’d say that I have only ever found one other fic that can compete with this one in terms of emotion conveyed through dialogue. I don’t really have much to say here, because when dialogue is good, I don’t have anything to critique. This dialogue is absolutely fantastic.
Romance: The romance is the reason this fic is as high up as it is. I mentioned how well written Harry and Luna were earlier, but watching them play off each other is something else entirely. Every. Single. Scene where Harry and Luna interacting is at least 200% better than the rest of the fic, and that’s saying a lot, cause the rest of it is very good as well. Whether they’re chasing butterflies together as children, or saying goodbye as young adults before going their separate ways, their interactions are always realistic, emotive, and an absolute joy to read. This continues to be the case for all ten thousand words, and it becomes especially noticeable at the end, which has one of the best endings I’ve ever read in a oneshot. It’s emotionally resonant, it’s heart warming, it’s everything a romance oneshot should be. I absolutely love it, and I bet you will as well.
Writing Mechanics: The mechanics are all solid here. The grammar is, for the most part, correct, the spelling is all accurate, the prose flow well, and the tone is consistent.
Overall: So yes, Forever in my Heart is a Harry Potter/Downton Abbey crossover story, and yes, that is very weird. However, this story is one of the greatest oneshots I have ever, and likely will ever read. See, the focus of this story is on the dynamic between Harry and Luna, and their blossoming friendship turned romance, so the odd crossover choice is not especially distracting. This story also has what is, in my opinion, an absolutely fantastic romantic payoff at the end. When I finished reading it for the first time I spent the rest of the day smiling uncontrollably, and this has been the case every time I’ve reread it thus far. It’s just so cute, and so heartwarming, that I will likely never shut up about it. To make things even better, it’s also a Harry/Luna story, which is my favorite Harry Potter pairing. Please check out this story, I promise you will not regret it.
Final Thoughts: I absolutely adore Forever in My Heart, and I highly recommend it for anyone who likes oneshots, anyone who likes romance, and most importantly, anyone who likes well written Luna.
