Author’s Summary: Harry doesn’t stand a chance against the forces of evil – he doesn’t know that but many others do, including a younger pureblooded girl who doesn’t want to lose everything. Astoria Greengrass intervenes on his behalf and forms an attachment along the way.
Characterization: Only two characters matter in a fic like this: Harry and Astoria. So what do I think of them? Well….I like them. They’re fun to read about, and their dynamic is cute. Astoria’s also insanely funny. Right from the moment her character’s introduced I was totally hooked. She has a fantastic blend of stubborn and casual, and….she’s just an absolute joy to read, and while not as good as Astoria, Harry’s also pretty good too. This particular version of Harry is something that I’ve seen done before, especially in James Spookie’s Haphne fics, but I like Spookie’s fics, and I think it’s done well here as well. He’s mostly canon-compliant, but just needs a little push to become…craftier, I suppose. Now, while I definitely enjoy both of these characters, neither of them really blow me away either, which definitely holds this fic back a fair amount.
Romance: The romance also mostly works. I mean….when I go into a romance oneshot like this, I’m just looking for something that’ll make me go “Awww, that was cute” and this made me think to myself “Awww, that was cute” so it did the thing I wanted it to do. I also have to give credit for doing a rare pair, because not enough people do that, and it’s always a nice change of pace to see romance oneshots focusing on characters who aren’t Hermione, Daphne, or Fleur. However, my rule with romance is that in order to receive a five it has to do something beyond making me feel fuzzy inside for a second, and that doesn’t really happen very often. Some of the only times it has are in fics like Forever in My Heart or The Other Champion. So….yeah, it’s great! It’s just some tooth-rotting fluff that made me smile.
Dialogue: The dialogue is mostly functional. It’s definitely stronger than in other fics like A Good Riddle or The Saviour’s Pariah. I’m a huge fan of that opening interaction between Harry and Astoria. It’s snappy, it has good jokes, it has a few cute moments, it’s just….everything I could possibly hope for in a fic like this. However, as it goes on, there are a few moments here and there when a few awkward lines here and there pull me out of the story a bit, which is a real shame. The worst offender for me is the interaction following Harry freeing himself from Romilda’s trap. That just didn’t work for me, but that doesn’t exactly undo all the great dialogue surrounding it, which balances out to me feeling quite mixed about this fic’s dialogue as a whole.
Plot: Here’s where things get a bit iffy for me. As I’ve said over and over again by now, I really, really like the opening scene, and I think the following two or three scenes in the library do a great job of continuing that energy. Where this fic loses me is the shit with Romilda and her friends. It’s not even that there’s anything mechanically wrong with the scene, cause I think the motivations work for the most part, but….I just don’t like romance executed in this way. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine, and I’m sorry that all the fics I review will be subjected to it, but….idk, all the shitty Harmony fics do this, and I used to read a lot of shitty Harmony fics. I much prefer when conflicts in romance are driven by the characters and their differences and flaws, rather than by outside sources trying to interfere. However, I also understand that this is a short romance oneshot, so I think it’s unfair for me to be too harsh on it. There’s also the fact that I really like both the beginning and ending, so it would be unfair for me to be overly harsh about this. Unfortunately, the good and the bad kind of cancel each other out here, and I found myself quite disappointed by this fic’s plot by the time I got to the admittedly great ending.
Writing Mechanics: From what I saw, this fic is, for the most part, mechanically sound. The grammar seems to be mostly correct, there aren’t too many awkward hyphens like in A Saviour’s Pariah, and everything is spelled correctly (although that’s the case for about 90% of the fics I review). There’s one or two mistakes here or there, but nothing that’s worth getting mad over or criticizing at all, really.
Overall: I like Harry and his Princess. I won’t pretend it blew me mind or anything, but I thought that it was far superior to A Good Riddle, and had some cute charm of its own. At the end of the day, what more could a guy ask for in a short romance oneshot? There are a couple clunky plot beats here and there, but I’m mostly able to overlook those because I think the characterization is really strong, and the dialogue is cute and funny.
Final Thoughts: If you like romance oneshots, then you’ll like this fic. If you like Astoria, you’ll like this fic. If you enjoy romance comedies, then you’ll like this fic. If you’re not into reading romance for the sake of romance, then….you can probably skip this one. It’s great for what it is though. It truly, truly is.
