Author’s Summary: “You are definitely a person worth saving.” Seven words spoken by a stranger standing at the foot of Hermione’s hospital bed irrevocably change both of their lives forever. AU. Muggle Hermione. One-Shot.

My Thoughts:
Characterization: Healer does a good job doing a lot in a small amount of words. Luckily for it, there are only two characters who need to be fleshed out, and it does a very good job with them. I really like the idea of two characters who are both at absolute rock bottom for absolutely opposite reasons finding solace in each other. That’s just a really solid concept for a romance short story, and I think this characterization serves the fic really well. It’s not anything that blew my mind, but it worked really, really well for the story it’s in.

Plot: The plot is great. I’m a big fan of several of the ideas, especially what was done with Hermione. There’s a reason this is my favorite Harmony fic out there. To see Hermione brought to this point is really moving, and separates her from the other hundreds of awful, cliched fics that don’t understand what makes her character work. I love the imagery that the plot invokes. Of a mentally broken person sitting next to the bed of a physically broken one, telling her his life story and slowly transferring his life essence into her in order to repair her. It’s really great, and the fic does a great job bringing this to life. Without the plot, this fic wouldn’t work, and would hardly count as the same story. I adore it more than I can say.

Dialogue: There isn’t an over-abundance of dialogue here, but the stuff that exists works really, really well. Just like the characterization, it services the story really well. It also has a very solid flow to it. A lot of fanfics have fairly awkward and stiff dialogue, and that’s not really the case here which definitely helps make this fic as impactful as it is.

Romance: This is where this fic shines. The romance is absolutely outstanding. This fic doesn’t have some epic kiss at the end. It also doesn’t have them fuck, or really any of the things you might expect from a romance short story. Instead, it ends in a way that is filled with hope, and the implication that romance will develop naturally overtime. I really, really dig this, because I think it fits the fic’s tone really, really well, and it succeeds at both being different from most other stories in a way that is both interesting and makes sense.

Writing Mechanics: As usual in the high tiers, there’s not much to discuss here. The grammar is solid, the spelling is correct, and it all flows rather well. There are some errors here and there, though.

Overall: Healer is an absolutely fantastic romance one-shot. It’s short, sweet, and incredibly heart warming. The basic premise is that in this world Hermione is a Muggle who suffered a tragic accident at a young age and has suffered from full body paralysis ever since. This is set after the war with Voldemort, by the way, so it’s not eleven year old romance or any bullshit like that. Anyway, I connected with this story. It’s very sweet, it puts a smile on my face when I read it, and I reread it fairly often. I don’t really have much more to say besides that, but I suppose that’s reasonable considering it’s only 5,000 words long anyway.

Final Thoughts: I recommend Healer for anyone who loves romance, but more specifically anyone who doesn’t like Harmony. I understand that there are a lot of bad Harmony fics, and a lot of people hate the pairing, but this fic is different. I promise that this is the exception to the general quality you can expect from a Harmony romance oneshot. And to be clear, I like Harmony, but to those who don’t, this will be the fic to change your mind.
