Homecoming

By Brennus

Status: Complete, Word Count: 102,400, Pairing: Harry Potter/Ginny Weasley, Bill Weasley/Nymphadora Tonks

Author’s Summary: After four years working overseas for the shadowy Department M, a world-weary and dispirited Harry Potter returns to the land of his birth. He meets some old friends and makes some new ones, as he learns that much has changed since he left home. AU, a ‘Harry never went to Hogwarts’ story.

My Thoughts: Homecoming is an interesting mystery that has an unnecessary romance inserted into it. My main problem with Brennus as an author is that he feels the need to inject Harry/Ginny into every story he writes, and it has never been more evident here. I think the mystery in this fic is excellent. It’s really well set up, the foreshadowing is actually rather subtle, and the payoff works fairly well. I also think that both Harry and Tonks are really well characterized. However, neither Ginny nor Bill have any personality, and I’d argue the romance detracts from the story. If there had to be romance, this should have been a Harry/Tonks story, but even then I’d argue that it’d be better without any romantic subplot at all. It’d allow the mystery to be fleshed out more, and it’d have probably made the fic a bit shorter too. Overall, I’d hesitantly recommend this to fans of mystery, but you need to have a pretty high tolerance of mediocre romance in order to get through it.
