My Thoughts: The Downward Spiral Saga is a series of highs and lows. At its best, it’s some of the best fanfiction I’ve ever read, and it has some all time highs that will probably stick with me for a long time. Gellert Grindelwald, the priest scene from year three, Tonks, and several others immediately spring to mind. It has some great characterization when it wants to, its plot-lines are often very interesting, and it does a great job making a Harry who is truly and genuinely evil, but not to a point where it becomes ridiculous or hard to believe. There’s always robust worldbuilding backing up the decisions, and as long as everything if cohesive in universe, that’s all that really matters. It also has a fair number of incredibly memorable torture scenes sprinkled throughout the later books, and although this series is far from torture porn, they’re apparently memorable enough for many to falsely label it as such. And honestly, this series triggering dark!Harry fans by forcing them to read through stuff that makes them uncomfortable is enough of an achievement for it to earn some bonus points in my book. Seriously, fuck dark!Harry fans.

With that being said, when this series is at its worst, it is rough to get through. Bloated storylines, a genuinely staggering amount of pointless canon rehash in the earlier books, and some of the worst writing I’ve had the displeasure of sifting through in a long time in book one, and some inconsistent plotting ensure that this series is not all sunshine and roses.

But at the end of the day, this series does get more right than it does wrong, and for a first attempt at writing a full series, this is honestly pretty fucking great. Not to mention, it has a fantastic sequel/spin-off in Echoes in the Fog, so if you dig the series, there’s even more waiting for you once you’ve gotten to the end of the series proper.

So yeah, feel free to read my far more in-depth thoughts on each individual part of the series if you’d like, they’re all linked down below, but overall I think I’m putting this high up in the Good Tier. Definitely worth checking out if you’re interested in this type of thing, and undeniably one of the best takes on dark!Harry out there, but that’s really not saying much considering how generally awful this genre is.

Tier: Good Tier

My Thoughts on the Individual Parts of the Series:

Book One: Harry Potter and the Homecoming – Not Good Tier
Book Two: Harry Potter and Salazar’s Legacy – Good Tier
Book Three: Harry Potter and the Year of Broken Chains – Great Tier
Book Four: Harry Potter and the Return of the Lost – Average Tier
Book Five: Harry Potter and the Dirge of Hope – Great Tier
Interlude: In Her Image – Great Tier
Book Six: Harry Potter and the End of the War – Great Tier

Thoughts on the Sequel: Echoes in the Fog
