Word Count: 10,300, Pairings: Harry Potter/Daphne Greengrass, Draco Malfoy/Hermione Granger
My Thoughts: So this fic is still really good, and it still has all the problems that this series has had since day one. So let’s start with the things I liked about this chapter. First of all, Dumbledore’s death scene is fucking fantastic. The author has been building to this since the beginning of the book, and I just absolutely adored this scene. It was everything that this particular payoff needed to be. In fact, I’d argue that that scene, and everything that goes on in it, is some of the strongest writing I’ve seen from this author yet. I also am continually grudgingly impressed at the Hermione/Draco romance. This is a pairing that I am never really a fan of, but this fic has pulled it off shockingly well, and although I will continue to bitch about this pairing, it is undeniably well done here. There wasn’t much Daphne in this chapter, which was a shame, but I think everything else more than made up for that. I also thought the confrontation in the Gryffindor Common Room was shockingly well executed. It had some real tension going throughout, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. However, this fic’s biggest issue continues to be the fact that it’s a WBWL fic. Like, I cannot overemphasize how much this whole series is hurt by the WBWL framework, because as a result of this trope, there is bashing present throughout, and the actual dogshit quality of the first book is continuing to be an absolute stain on the rest of the series. So….yeah, an overall good chapter that’s still hurt by the choices made early on. I’m enjoying this fic quite a bit so far, and I do recommend giving it a read.
